Full Stack Developer - New Zealand - Wellington

We are looking for an experienced full stack developer to join our Wellington office; a problem solver who is passionate about open source and can think innovatively and creatively.

As part of a small team, you will play a key role in the ongoing development of CabNet, a system that supports the highest levels of government and counts the Prime Minister among its users. It is no exaggeration to say that your work will make a significant contribution to the smooth running of government.

You will be working on an existing, long-lived codebase, but you will need to be comfortable taking the lead on the design of new components. Top-notch communication skills are key, as you will be meeting the client face-to-face on a regular basis. This includes being on-site with them at times, which requires you to be eligible for a security clearance.

You will need to have excellent programming skills in a variety of languages, good unit testing habits, and experience using version control and collaborative development practices (such as code reviews and pair programming).

The software you'll be working on includes many different technologies ranging from Java, Spring and React to Ubuntu, PostgreSQL and Puppet. Experience with these particular tools will be useful, but more important is the ability to move comfortably up and down the stack when diagnosing problems and developing solutions.

You should have experience with:

  • Designing solutions, not just implementing them
  • A diverse range of programming languages and frameworks
  • Linux/Unix command line
  • CI/CD technologies
  • Containers and cloud technologies
  • Agile practices

Previous experience with other open source software and practices will be a definite advantage as well so please be sure to note these, as well as any open source contributions you've made. If your application is short-listed we may invite you to complete a small technical exercise, the intention of which is to give us an idea of how you code, and something to talk about during an interview.
