Intermediate Front End JavaScript Developer - New Zealand - Wellington

Catalyst IT is New Zealand's leading open source development company and has staff worldwide, with the majority (including this role) based in Wellington. We specialize in open source software and web applications, and are a leader in the NZ open source community. We believe that open source, open data and an open business model should and can be the preferred choice.

We are looking for a skilled JavaScript developer who is proficient with React to join our in house design/UX team. Your primary focus will be on developing user interface components and implementing them following well-known React workflows (such as Redux or Flux). You will ensure that these components and the overall application are robust and easy to maintain. You will coordinate with the rest of the team working on different layers of the infrastructure. Therefore a commitment to collaborative problem solving, sophisticated design, and quality product is important.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will be to develop new user-facing features using modern JavaScript, translate designs and wireframes into high quality code and to optimize components for maximum performance across both web-capable devices and browsers. You’ll also do code review of your colleagues’ contributions and help to scope and assess new work as part of an agile team.

We’re looking for someone in the mid range of their career – you will have at least a couple of years of work experience. You should be proficient in modern JavaScript and have a thorough understanding of React.js and its core principles. You should also have experience with popular React.js workflows such as Redux or Flux. You will have the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical requirements, and you should have familiarity with Git code versioning.

Other things that will make your application stand out are listed below, but these are preferences and not requirements so please don’t think of this as a checklist:

  • Experience with other modern JS frameworks such as Angular
  • Familiarity with RESTful API driven development
  • Experience with creating or adapting modern front-end build pipelines with tools such as Webpack
  • Knowledge of static typing libraries such as Flow or TypeScript
  • Experience with modern CSS techniques and CSS preprocessors like SASS

Being a good employer is really important to us. We are an inclusive group who value learning and development and encourage each other to discover and work with new technologies. We get together every Friday afternoon to relax, share company news from around the world and celebrate the achievements of our staff. We also offer health insurance, flexible working hours, plenty of training opportunities, and a great central location.

If this sounds like you please send your CV and cover letter to [email protected].
