PHP Software Developer

As part of our ongoing success and growth, we are thrilled to announce multiple opportunities for software developers to join our team in Brighton, UK, and Ireland, remote working is also available. As part of our team, you will play a crucial role in sustaining our reputation for providing outstanding open-source software development services for our marquee brand clients in the Higher Education and not-for-profit sectors.

Job summary
As a valued team member, you will contribute to either the Catalyst project team or the SRE team, focusing on projects within the Higher Education and not-for-profit space. Our projects can range from enhancements to platforms or custom plugin development to full system migrations and platform upgrades. We also have a part of our business (SRE) that delivers a support service to a portfolio of clients, this includes working with clients and other teams within Catalyst in analysing, identifying, troubleshooting and bug fixing to increase the reliability and performance of customer sites. You must be comfortable communicating with both a technical and non-technical audience. Training to help you get settled into the role is provided via our onboarding buddy system. We encourage all our staff to develop continuously and this will be a combination of supported training and self-paced learning.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ability to work with a non-technical audience (clients and colleagues) and ability to clearly articulate      complex technical issues
  • For more senior candidates, a demonstrated ability to lead technical decisions and design
  • Ability to develop new specialist knowledge in relevant technologies, programming languages, tools, techniques and apply expertise and knowledge to deliver effective solutions
  • Excellent understanding of PHP
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript
  • Working knowledge of Linux
  • Experience with Moodle, Mahara, Drupal and Totara is desirable
  • Experience with container-based workloads and their orchestration systems; specific knowledge of AWS RDS, ECS, EKS and Docker is beneficial
  • Familiarity with Git, Gerrit, Jenkins or similar development pipeline tools
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL and MySQL Databases
